How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
I have been in Special Olympics for 7 years now.
How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?
I first got involved by entering a local figure skating competition. Since then I’ve made new friends, had a lot of fun, and even had the chance to travel!
What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?
Travelling and eating while away at competitions is hard. My coaches have introduced me to new foods and I’ve learned how to eat good, healthy and safe foods while travelling and training.
What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?
My favourite memory is going to the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary and winning a gold medal for my solo in figure skating and third place for my dances. That was my first time on airplane and I made even more new friends.
What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?
Participating in sports with Special Olympics athletes and coaches teach you to succeed in high intensity situations. Self-discipline, teamwork, learning to work with others, mental toughness, handling fear and failure and goal setting are all skills I’ve learned through Special Olympics. Dream big and anything is possible!
What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
I am so excited and happy to be part of Special Olympics Team Canada. My goal is to work on doing my best and win a medal!
What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?
Please, do not refer to anyone as ‘kids’.
What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?
You will find happiness, joy, and friendships as part of a community. You will learn new skills and gain fitness and confidence.
