How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

I have been a Special Olympics athlete for 15 years.

How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?

My swim team coach suggested that I join. I hadn't heard of Special Olympics before that. I have friends who I would not know if it weren't for Special Olympics. I am more active than I would have been.

What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?

I got disqualified in some swim races because my whip kick was not good enough. I practiced lots and now it's okay. I learned not to get too frustrated when something isn't working for you and to just keep trying.

What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?

My favourite memory happened when I went to the World Games in South Korea. When I was being presented with my medal I looked out into the crowd and I saw one of my best friends from home watching me get my medal! It was a big surprise!!

What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?

To play fair and to cheer other people on.

What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?

It is an honour and a privilege to be part of Team Canada.  In Turin I want to not be too scared when the people who are skate skiing pass me at a great speed when we're all snow-plowing down a hill. I also want to have fun. I want to win a medal, but I will not have my heart set on it in case I don't.

What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?

I want people to know that others with disabilities can do anything they set their mind to and they shouldn't be judged, no matter how different they are. Also, people with disabilities can change the lives of people who do not have disabilities so it is good to have them as friends.

What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?

I would encourage them to sign up because Special Olympics makes you feel welcome and it might change your life
