How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

I have been involved since 1992.

How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?

I first got involved because I was looking to join an organization that would accept me for who I am and the abilities I have. My first sport was alpine skiing as I knew how to ski and my mother knew the coach (who also had a child with special needs). Special Olympics has allowed me many things - friends locally and worldwide, the opportunity to travel, many learning opportunities, and has encouraged my social skills.

What is one barrier you have overcome? How did you do it and what did you learn?

I'm not as shy as I used to be and will even participate in conversations with people I don't know.

What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?

I have so many favourite moments - my first Special Olympics World Games in 1997, my first medal, attending Parliament with Special Olympics Team Canada 2017, being recognized by SOBC for the Athletic Achievement Award in 2013, being honored to be the final Torch Bearer and lighting the cauldron at the National Games in Cranbrook for the 2010 Torch Run.

What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?

Special Olympics has taught me to believe in myself and others.

What does being a part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?

To represent my country to the best of my ability & do the best I can (hopefully win a medal)

What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?

We are no different than anyone else, we just may need a little extra time or support.

What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?

This is an amazing organization - it allows us to participate in sport and competition and perhaps even travel to different parts of our province, country, and with hard work perhaps even the world. Along the way, we meet many people and form lifelong friendships.
