How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
I have been a Special Olympics athlete for 6 years.
How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?
My first experience with Special Olympics was through my high school. I joined my local community in 2018 and the first SO sport I tried was track and field. I had such a good experience, that I joined many more sports after that, even trying sports that I had never tried before (curling and speedskating). I have made many friends through Special Olympics and gained so much confidence!
What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?
I love to practice, but I get really nervous when I compete. I have learned to believe in my abilities and always try my best. You win some, you lose some. It's OK not to win, as long as you try your best.
What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?
My favourite memory with Special Olympics so far has been skating at the Olympic Oval in Calgary at the Special Olympics Canada Games 2024. The ice was perfect ice, super smooth and super fast. I skated all personal bests. It was amazing!
What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?
I have learned to always try my best no matter what I am doing. I always give 100%. I have also learned that there are ups and downs no matter what you are doing, but to never give up.
What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
I am SO excited to be a part of Team Canada. This is such an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I am extremely honoured to be part of this team. I worked really hard to get to this point and will work even harder to be the best I can be in Turin. My goal is to enjoy all the experiences of the Games and to skate my absolute best!
What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?
I want people to know that even though I have an intellectual disability, I am capable of being an elite athlete. I train at a high level and compete at a high level. Don't underestimate my ability just because I have an intellectual disability.
What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?
Special Olympics is for everyone. No matter your ability, you can compete and succeed. You will meet athletes, coaches, parents and caregivers who will cheer you on and make you feel special. You will make lifelong friends and gain self-confidence. You will LOVE being part of Special Olympics!
