How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
I have been a Special Olympics athlete for 30 years.
How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?
I first got involved when I was in Grade 9. One of the Teacher Aids started to teach Rhythmic Gymnastics. Special Olympics has changed my life and I have made friends. Now I Swim, Bowl, Ski, play Bocce and I still go to Rhythmic Gymnastics.
What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?
I thought I would never be able to ski fast in a race because of my CP. Now I train hard and can win.
What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?
My favourite memory was being a member of Team Canada 2022.
What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?
That you have to be positive and things will work out.
What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
I am very proud to be a member of Team Canada as I have worked very hard to get the Maple Leaf on my back. I hope to win medals for Canada.
What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?
We can all fit in no mater what we do. It may take us a bit longer to do things, but we will get there.
What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?
It is a lot of fun and you get to meet a lot of people.
