How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
13 years.
How did you first introduced to the movement and what got you hooked?
I first got introduced to Special Olympics through college, when PEI hosted the National Games in 2004. My class volunteered for the full week. Then in 2011, I had just graduated from University and came across a 6-month job. Luckily, they hired me and I haven't looked back since!
How has Special Olympics impacted your life?
Special Olympics has opened so many doors for me and given me so many opportunities to meet new people, experience new things and help athletes achieve their goals.
What is your favourite part about your role on the team?
My favourite part is getting to meet new athletes and coaches. I love sport and I'm very excited to see our athletes compete on the world stage. I'm also very excited to be working with the speed skating team. Our head coach, Donna, has so much experience and I am excited to see how she brings the team together.
What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?
The thing I am most proud of is the growth of our Team PEI program at Special Olympics PEI. We have worked hard as staff to continue to grow our high performance program to ensure athletes are working hard and improving at their sport.
What does being a part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
Being a part of Special Olympics Team Canada is such an honour, and I am so looking forward to walking out in the red and white at the Opening Ceremony. My goal is to experience as much as I can at Games and ensure our athletes reach their goals.
What unique skills or experiences do you bring to your role as a coach, mission staff or team leadership and what drives you to support and inspire the athletes every day?
I love sport and I am excited to watch our speed skating team. I love to take pictures and videos to showcase our athletes. I love to help and will ensure the coaches have what they need to help them succeed.
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering with Special Olympics?
You will never regret getting involved in volunteering, but there is something extra special about being involved with Special Olympics. You will experience things that are new and exciting and meet the most interesting people.
