How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

20 years.

How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?

I joined an athletics club and that club had me enter a Special Olympics snowshoe competition. I competed in those Provincial Games and then went on to compete at Nationals. Special Olympics has led me to meet new people, try new sports and it has helped to keep me in better shape and stay healthy.

What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?

I broke my hip when I was 12. I had that taken care of at the time but eventually needed a hip replacement as an adult. I did not think I would be able to do sports, but thanks to being encouraged and pushed by my coaches at Special Olympics, I am still taking part in snowshoe competitions, track events and have recently joined a bocce ball club.

What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?

My favourite memory is my experience at the last Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary. I was part of a great team, made friends with other athletes from Manitoba and met other athletes from across Canada. Getting medals in each of the three events I entered was rewarding as well.

What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?

I have learned that it's important to listen to my coaches, which has helped me learn that following directions at work is important as well.

What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?

I am very proud to have earned a spot on the team and look forward to doing my best in Turin. It is a milestone in my life so far, and I am excited to visit a new country and meet people from around the world.

What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?

I want them to know that athletes like me have worked hard to excel in our sports and that we are proud of our accomplishments. We appreciate being celebrated.

What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?

Joining a Special Olympics program will show you that you can do more than you thought you could. It gives you healthy activities to do to keep you busy and get you out to meet new people.
