How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
I have been involved for approximately 8 years.
How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?
I became involved with the Special O downhill ski program through a friend and her family. I loved the program, the friends I made and the excellent coaching. I have much more confidence and joy in my skiing. I have also had the opportunity to experience different ski resorts and meet friends from all over BC and Canada!
What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?
I was nervous about skiing 'black' runs and icy conditions. My excellent coaches helped me overcome these barriers, and I have learned to enjoy these challenges.
What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?
Skiing to Gold at the Special Olympics Winter Games Calgary 2024 is my proudest moment. Hanging out with new friends at Nationals was amazing too!
What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?
Fitness, practice makes perfect and determination!
What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
I am thrilled to be part of something big and so happy to have an opportunity to travel to Europe. My goal is to be my best possible self and to ski hard, safely, and have fun.
What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?
We are just like everybody else when it comes to training, physical activity, goal setting and being proud of our achievements.
What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?
It is super fun. You will learn so much more about your favourite sport. The coaches and volunteers are awesome and are really encouraging.
