How did you first introduced to the movement and what got you hooked?

I was introduced to Special Olympics more than 10 years ago. My son Justin was involved with some activities with our local program, and I saw what a big impact it had on him both mentally and physically. After that, I started helping out at the cross country ski sessions in Vernon and I really enjoyed seeing all the skiers have fun, get stronger and more confident.

How has Special Olympics impacted your life?

It has provided me with many opportunities for personal growth and learning more about coaching athletes with diverse abilities. It has been challenging and rewarding.

What is your favourite part about your role on the team?

I enjoy doing ski prep. I like the challenge involved in getting the base prep right for the specific conditions and athlete. I Like to keep things organized and there are a lot of details that needs to be kept track of.

What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?

My proudest moments have been being selected to the past Special Olympics Team Canada and the current team going to the Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025.

What does being a part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?

I am excited to be a coach for Special Olympics Team Canada. My goals are to help out where needed, make it a fun and positive experience for the athletes, and get the wax right!!

What unique skills or experiences do you bring to your role as a coach, mission staff or team leadership and what drives you to support and inspire the athletes every day?

I had the opportunity to be present for the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria in 2017 as a parent. I watched and cheered for athletes from all over the world as they gave it their all. It was incredibly inspiring!

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering with Special Olympics?

Special Olympics athletes are amazing people. Helping them stay active, have fun and make connections with other athletes is very rewarding. There are a variety of sports and other ways to get involved. Pick something that you love and sign up.
