Mark Schnurr

How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
34 years.
How did you first introduced to the movement and what got you hooked?
I first got involved when I needed volunteer hours for high school. My brother was a part of Special Olympics, and I was sporty growing up so my mom said why don't you look at volunteering with the movement. So I did, and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made!!
How has Special Olympics impacted your life?
I was 15 when I started volunteering with Special Olympics. I met my wife through volunteering with Special Olympics. I'm a caregiver to two Special Olympics athletes. Now, my daughter has also become a Special Olympics coach. It's impacted my life in a huge way.
What is your favourite part about your role on the team?
There are so many great coaches on this team. To work alongside them is going to make the team a joy to be on.
What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?
My first experience at a Special Olympics World Games in Austria in 2017. I was an assistant coach with my good pal and head coach, Randy Scott, who I've now had the privilege of coaching alongside for 30 years.
What does being a part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
Being a part of Special Olympics Team Canada means everything. My goal is for this team to have lifelong memories, to be as prepared as we can possibly be, and to come home with some hardware.
What unique skills or experiences do you bring to your role as a coach, mission staff or team leadership and what drives you to support and inspire the athletes every day?
In my 34 years, I've seen a lot and been a part of a lot of great teams – some better than others. I’m hoping with that knowledge, we can have the best experience possible. Our athletes work their tails off every day and never give any attitude. These athletes inspire me.
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering with Special Olympics?
Try it, it will be the best decision you'll ever make.
