How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
I have been a Special Olympics athlete for 16 years.
How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?
Before Special Olympics I was very shy, not social, and did not have any friends. My Mom signed me up for Special Olympics 5-pin bowling to become more social and to meet people.
What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?
I am no longer shy or insecure, I have lots of friends and I like socializing with everyone! Competing in sports with Special Olympics gave me the confidence to overcome all those fears and my coaches also were there to encourage me all the time.
What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?
Representing Canada in powerlifting at the World Games in Berlin, Germany and bringing home 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal
What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?
Special Olympics has taught me to be disciplined and to never give up!
What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
It makes me proud to represent the Canadian flag. I am proud of my country and all that we have to offer and I am hoping to bring back a medal...or two! I also want to meet athletes from different countries and exchange our experiences.
What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?
We can do everything that they can do. We may have to work harder to learn new skills and have it explained/taught to us in a different way but we are determined so never count us out!
What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?
Face you fear and join a program-you won't regret it! You will meet great people, other athletes and coaches that want the best for you.
