How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
4 years.
How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?
My mum told me about Special Olympics years ago and I thought it sounded interesting, so I tried it and enjoyed it. It’s given me something to take part in where I can achieve my personal best.
What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?
Recognizing that I am different than others, but still working hard at what I can do and accepting that I may not be able to do things in the same ways others can. Everyone is different and has different strengths.
What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?
My favourite memory was earning 3 gold medals while my grandparents and family from overseas were watching me at the Special Olympics Canada Games.
What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?
I have learned to keep working on things until I understand it.
What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
To know that I am part of the best of the best in Canada. My goal is to have fun.
What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?
Not every disability is visible, and no one should be judged.
What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?
It’s a fun program where you get to take part in different sports.
