The excitement in the room was palpable as Special Olympics Team Canada athletes, family members, supporters, and key figures in the movement gathered in Turin for the Special Olympics Team Canada Reception. This special event welcomed the entire team, along with hometown cheer crews, national partners, and loved ones who traveled across the world to support their athletes at the largest global sports and humanitarian event.

Throughout the evening, two athlete leaders took the stage to share their stories, reflecting on the impact of Special Olympics and the significance of representing Canada at the World Games. Among them was 17-year-old Océane Rajotte, a first-time World Games athlete who took to the stage to share her journey, gratitude, and the impact of Special Olympics in her life. With grace and emotion, she reflected on her path to Turin, the power of inclusion, and the unwavering support of her family and teammates.

Hi everyone, my name is Océane, I’m 17 years old, and I’ve been part of Special Olympics since I was 3 years old. These are my very first World Games — and honestly, I never thought I’d make it this far. I’ve always loved skating — whether it’s in generic sport or through Special Olympics — the ice has always been my happy place. But Special Olympics has been something different. It’s been the most welcoming place I’ve ever experienced. A place where everyone belongs. It hasn’t always been easy for me to find my place — at school, with my peers, even sometimes within Special Olympics. Maybe that’s just part of being 17 — I don’t know. But what I do know is that Special Olympics is the one place where I’ve never felt judged. I’ve only ever felt warmth, kindness, and support. And because of that, I’ve had the space to figure out who I am — to find myself, and to grow into the athlete and person standing here today. I’ve always been someone who wants to keep pushing myself, to find ways to go further and do more. Special Olympics opened that door for me. It gave me opportunities I never thought possible — and now, I’m so proud to be representing my country, skating alongside my incredible teammates, and wearing the maple leaf on my back. I also want to take a moment to thank my parents. You’ve been there through everything — especially in those moments when I felt like giving up. You never stopped believing in me, even when I wasn’t sure I believed in myself. And now — we’re here. We made it. And finally, to my teammates — you inspire me every single day. We’ve all worked so hard to get here, and knowing I get to step on the ice alongside you makes this experience even more special. To everyone here cheering us on — it means the world to know you’re watching, supporting, and celebrating with us. Thank you for believing in us, and for being part of this incredible journey. Thank you.
