How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

17 years.

How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?

I started participating in Special Olympics in the summer of 2022 by signing up for soccer and track and field. I've expanded my circle of friends and improved my fitness and self-confidence.

What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?

I'd never done a sprint and long jump before. With practice, I improved my running technique, as I tended to slow down before the finish line. I also learned the importance of staying within my racing lane. With the practice of the long jump, I improved my momentum on each jump.

What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?

When I won my two gold medals at the Special Olympics Winter Games Calgary 2024.

What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?

My participation in Special Olympics, especially at Games, has helped me develop more independence. Sometimes it can be anxiety-provoking for me. However, it enabled me to develop my self-esteem and personal autonomy, and I can transfer these skills to my personal life and education on a daily basis.

What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?

It means a new opportunity to develop my independence and confidence, the chance to meet new athlete friends, and the chance to medal in my competitions!

What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?

We also have interests and dreams in life, and we have the ability to set goals and take the action to achieve them.

What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?

Special Olympics is an opportunity to participate in one or more sports we love, or to learn about new ones. It's an organization that allows us to enjoy great experiences, meet other athletes and expand our circle of friends. We can experience success in many areas of our lives: social, physical and mental health, and so on.
