How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

I have been involved with Special Olympics for 14 years.

How were you first introduced to the movement and what got you hooked?

Through the Knights of Columbus we provided meeting space to the community executive, I attended those meetings as the Grand Knight of my council. They invited me to be part of their Christmas Party then got me to be the team Chef for Provincial Games. Once I was involved with the athletes, I was hooked.

How has being involved with Special Olympics impacted your life?

Seeing life through the athlete's perspective and being welcomed into their family circles has made me feel welcomed and appreciated. Special Olympics believes in developing their coaches too. I have learned so many skills to apply to life.

What is your favourite part about your role on the team?

Hanging out with the athletes in freezing cold temperatures.

What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?

Working with an athlete for many years, and at competition he was so in the zone that he didn't even realize that he won the race, just competed to the best of his ability.

What does being a part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?

As a first time SOWG participant, I want to take it all in and bring my experience back to prepare my local athletes for competition at any level.

What unique skills or experiences do you bring to your role as a coach, mission staff or team leadership and what drives you to support and inspire the athletes every day?

I am a fairly calm, easy going individual. I try to roll with the changes and look for logical solutions to problems as they arise. I want to see all athletes preform to their top ability.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering with Special Olympics?

Just come out and try it. We have cookies (or at least hot chocolate)!
