How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
I have been a Special Olympics athlete for 27 years.
How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?
I first joined Special Olympics in 1997 when our family moved to Florida where Mom got a job as a nurse. I played many sports, but my passion was swimming and in-line speed skating. Special Olympics has given me confidence. It keeps me fit and happy. I have made so many friendships over the years.
What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?
I overcame two cancers through medical treatment. This has taught me that I have a purpose in this world, and I can overcome anything that life throws at me.
What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?
My proudest and memorable moments were when I was selected to represent Canada at World Games, in 2022 and now in 2025.
What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?
It has taught me how to be a team player and respect others. It is not always whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. I always congratulate my competitors after a race.
What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
It makes me feel proud to represent my country with my fellow athletes. My goal is to do my best and have fun. Hopefully I will be able to win a medal too.
What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?
We have the same hopes and dreams as everyone else.
What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?
Special Olympics is very sociable and so much fun and you get to compete against your peers.
