How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

I have been a Special Olympics athlete for 13 years.

How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?

My first experience with SO was with a track and field team back when I lived in Etobicoke. I currently participate in Golf, Basketball, and my personal favourite: Alpine Skiing. It has not only gotten me active and out of the house, but I’ve met a lot of people through SO, some who I have become friends with.

What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?

Being in SO has taught me to be patient. I understand these events are long days for people like me and sometimes there can be delays due to inclement weather or other circumstances. As long as I have things to keep me occupied, I am okay waiting between my events.

What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?

2019 Provincial Games in Sault Ste Marie, where I got to experience my first SO provincial games. Also, the Special Olympics Winter Games Calgary 2024, which was my first time in Western Canada, my first SO National Games, and where I won a hard-earned gold medal in slalom.

What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?

SO has really helped improve my skiing ability.

What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?

Being part of SO Team Canada to me is a major opportunity to shine on the world stage and meet other athletes in my sport from around the world.

What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?

We are no different from those who live without disabilities, and you should get to know us. We are just as capable of participating in sports, and have accomplished great things doing so.
