How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
I have been involved with Special Olympics for 2 years.
How were you first introduced to the movement and what got you hooked?
A good friend of mine coached a variety of Special Olympics sports in Yellowknife and was looking for people interested in replacing her when she moved away. I saw this as a great opportunity to learn more about the SO community in my hometown and to hone my coaching skills.
How has being involved with Special Olympics impacted your life?
To say being involved with Special Olympics has changed my life would be an understatement. Working with our incredible local athletes is the highlight of my week, and I've been so fortunate to connect with athletes, coaches and leadership from across the country as part of Team Canada. I've gained many skills that are transferrable to the professional and personal aspects of my life, and will be forever grateful to this amazing organization!
What is your favourite part about your role on the team?
My favorite part is witnessing the excitement and hard work of our athletes - their drive is phenomenal!
What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?
My proudest moment was at Special Olympics National Games in Calgary back in March 2024. We were waiting for transportation to the airport and I got to chatting with a curler from Team Alberta. Soon, he was teaching many of us how to sign different sports-related terms and the names of Disney characters and sharing the apps he uses to help with communication. We were all so excited to find new ways to communicate with each other.
What does being a part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
It is an honour to be part of a team of so many talented and passionate athletes, coaches and leadership staff, and to learn from everyone in different ways. My goal for Turin is to support the needs of the team however I can and to bring a positive and helpful attitude to every interaction.
What unique skills or experiences do you bring to your role as a coach, mission staff or team leadership and what drives you to support and inspire the athletes every day?
As mission staff, I'm highly organized and great under pressure, bringing experience in communications and emergency management. Competing in sport can be stressful, and I strive to show athletes that there are many supports at their fingertips and that it's okay to ask for help!
What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering with Special Olympics?
Don't hesitate another second - it will change your life and the lives of those around you for the better!
