How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

15 years.

How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?

I wrote a letter when I was little saying that I wanted to make it to the Olympics. I think my folks saw that letter and signed me up.

What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?

Learning to control my energy. Finding the sports that are right for me helped.

What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?

My favourite memory is making it to the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015. I also feel proud of myself when I uplift and cheer on fellow athletes.

What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?

It allows me to focus, think clear and feel calmer. Gratification is felt. It’s also good for mental wellness and helps me appreciate myself. Healthy eating and sleep are essential.

What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?

Effort, friendship, fun and uplifting one another.

What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?

Each one of us functions differently and has different needs. We’re different not less. All authentic in our own way.

What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?

Train and eat mostly healthy. Figure out what works for you. For example, figure out what gets you in game mode. Be true to yourself. Embrace the difference in you.
