How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
I have been a Special Olympics athlete for 17 years.
How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?
I met my friend Elizabeth and she told me I should try it. I went to snowshoe practice with her and really liked it. Then I joined track too and it was really fun and I got lots of medals. It has changed my life because it gets me exercising and I have met friends all over Nova Scotia and Canada.
What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?
My medication makes me really tired so I didn't think I could run. I have worked at it and know that I have to give myself rests. I learned that I can do things if I just try.
What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?
Being chosen to speak at the Special Olympics Gala for SONS to tell everyone about my experiences and encourage everyone to try Special O!
What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?
Play fair and give everyone a chance.
What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
It means I was chosen to represent my province and my whole country. I am very proud. My goal is to do my best and meet lots of new people.
What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?
That we aren't different, we just have different abilities.
What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?
Do it! It is so fun!
