How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

20 Years, I started skiing at 5

How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?

My mom first found out about Special Olympics skiing and signed me up. I really liked it, especially doing gates and checking my race times. I've been skiing ever since. Special Olympics has given me goals and dreams.

What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?

When I was 14 years old, I was skiing as an intermediate skier. I attended a competition and I did so well that my coaches and I thought I would get a gold medal, but I was unexpectedly elevated to the advanced division and ended up with no medals. It was a big hit. Over time, I learned that leveling up to becoming an advanced skier was better for me in the long run than getting a medal that day, but it took time.

What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?

Getting named to the national team to attend the Special Olympics World Games in Turin has been my proudest moment. I also love Italian food and I'm so excited that the World Games are in Italy!

What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?

I've learned perseverance through my sports with Special Olympics. The skills I’ve learned have helped me at work and when I went to culinary school.

What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?

I am proud to be part of Special Olympics Team Canada, and my goal is to get one medal and have a great time.

What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?

We are all capable – and really cool too.

What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?

Work really hard, try to be as mature as possible, independent as possible and achieve your goals. It is really worth it!
