How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

I have been in Special Olympics for 5 years.

How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?

A friend of mine told me about Special Olympics. Special Olympics has allowed me to be more confidant in who I am.

What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?

I have learned to overcome what being normal means. I learned that everyone is different and there is no such thing as normal.

What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?

My proudest Special Olympics moment was in Calgary for Special Olympics National Games knowing I had tight competition and seeing I got that gold medal!

What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?

Participating in Special Olympics has taught me how to work as team to achieve a goal.

What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?

Being part of Team Canada mean I get a chance to represent Canada in the best way possible by being kind, respectful, and peaceful. My goal is take it all in, try to make some friends, and do my best.

What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?

I want people to know that we are just people who need a little extra care. Most of us feel like we have to mask who we are. Get to know the individual. It can make a world of difference when we feel like we don’t have to wear a mask, and can be ourselves.

What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?

Special Olympics is a great program and you to be who you truly are.
