How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
22 years.
How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?
I was looking for a sport program that was inclusive and met my needs. Since finding Special Olympics, my life has changed because it has given me the opportunity to travel and see the world.
What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?
Special Olympics has helped me become more confident to talk to people.
What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?
My favourite memories have been from being able to travel internationally, and when I got to represent my country in Athens, Greece at the Special Olympics World Games 2011.
What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?
I have gained confidence which has helped me in my work environment. Learning new sports skills has helped me stay active through youth, and I can continue running, curling, and speed skating as a recreational activity throughout my adult life too.
What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
To be able to represent my country at a Special Olympics World Winter Games is an honour and my goal is to have fun and do my best.
What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?
Athletes with intellectual disabilities are no different from any other athlete. We can do the same sports, we train the same, we can do the same things other people can do. Just because we have a disability does not mean we aren't capable.
What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?
Special Olympics is a safe way to exercise and enjoy sports in a safe environment where people don't judge you for being yourself. You can make new friends and learn something new. So join your local club!
