Brian Waring

How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?
22 years.
How did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?
I first heard about it from one of my school teachers. It has made me very active and my life has been great with Special Olympics in it.
What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?
One barrier I had to overcome was figuring out which events would be the best for me to do in order to do very well in athletics and snowshoe. My coaches helped me chose the right events for me and helped train me so I could do well enough to go to Provincials and Nationals. Now to Worlds!
What has been your favourite memory with Special Olympics?
My favourite memory is qualifying to compete at Nationals for the first time in 2012.
What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?
I have learned how to have good interactions with the people in my life.
What does being part of Special Olympics Team Canada mean to you and what is your goal for Turin?
It means a lot to me. My goal is to do my very best and to enjoy the experience of being a part of the team representing our country at Special Olympics World Games.
What do you want people to know about athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities?
We are not very different from people without disabilities. We work hard, we do our very best and are brave in the attempt.
What would you say to someone thinking of getting involved in Special Olympics?
Don't be afraid to try something new. This is one of the best experiences anyone can have.
